Welcome to Mugen-an, a charming café nestled in the historic setting of 6 Yamanakaonsen Shimotanimachi, Kaga, Ishikawa. This picturesque establishment is not just a café; it's an experience that takes you back in time, surrounded by some of Japan's rich cultural heritage.

Stepping into Mugen-an is like entering a serene oasis where history and modern comfort blend seamlessly. Located within a beautifully restored samurai residence, the ambiance is adorned with exquisite lacquerware, intricate carvings, and delicate wooden craftsmanship. The atmosphere is tranquil, further enhanced by the gentle sounds of the nearby river. As you sip your drink, the natural beauty that envelops you becomes an integral part of the experience.

At Mugen-an, the menu includes delectable offerings that pay homage to traditional Japanese flavors, with standout dishes like the Margherita Pizza and the unique Goro Island Kintoki and Cheese Pizza, both priced at ¥1700. Each bite is a delightful experience; the Margherita pizza, with its balance of fresh ingredients and perfectly baked crust, is a comforting classic, while the Goro Island Kintoki pizza introduces a sweet-savory fusion that will surprise your palate.

Accompany your meal with one of their refreshing beverages and indulge in the sweet desserts on offer, all of which complement the rich heritage of the café. As noted by Andrew Faulk, the matcha tea served here is a revelation, perfectly paired with light, airy sweeties, and the views of the gorge below add to the magnificent experience.

The charm of Mugen-an extends beyond its menu. Visitors have remarked about the historic significance of the café, noting its construction as a fine example of late Meiji architecture. Rosalind De Sailly expresses appreciation for the amalgamation of several historic buildings that house the café and share stories from bygone eras. For anyone intrigued by Japan's cultural tapestry, a visit to Mugen-an offers not just a meal but a chance to immerse oneself in the past.

Further enhancing your visit, you can tour the captivating samurai house, where arrangements are made to intertwine the café experience with a historical exploration. If you're a history buff, U/S CPR acknowledges that while the beverages and desserts may be modest, the authenticity of the historical setting is priceless. And as Emily German points out, enjoying lunch here comes with the delightful advantage of touring the beautiful estate for free!

If you find yourself in Kaga, Mugen-an is a must-visit spot that promises unadulterated charm, delicious cuisine, and a slice of history that you won't easily forget. Treat yourself to an afternoon of culture, flavor, and serenity at this exceptional café.

This former residence is a fascinating amalgam of several historic buildings that were moved to Yamanaka and assembled in the early twentieth century. Included in the house and on display are excellent examples of lacquerware, rare woods, carvings and wood work, all in a beautiful, calm natural location with the music of the river bubbling from the ravine below.

The tea house is located in a peaceful, well-maintenance samurai house. Drink s and desserts are ordinary and a bit expensive. Nice place to visit if you are interested in historical places.

Matcha tea and sweeties are wonderful in the cafe. The view of the gorge and rushing river below are spectacular. Service is great and you get the chance to dine in a cafe adjacent to an authentic samurai home. Highly recommend!

This is a cafe in a historical house! The cafe overlooks the river, and if you buy lunch you can tour the house for free.

Beautiful! Lovely staff. Thank you. I went first and foremost for the café, the museum is included when you go so I got a guided tour as well. Such a beautiful setting, overlooking the forest and river.
